running & music

I run. But I wouldn't go so far as to calling myself a runner. Here's why- when I run, I run a 10 minute mile. Just one of them. *sadly this is only a slight exaggeration* Actually, when I'm running consistently I run about 3 miles (max).
My life goal- run a half marathon (I see absolutely no need to run a full marathon. Just ridiculous). As you can see, I have a ways to go before I reach that goal.

Running a 5k is an attainable goal for me. I've already done it a few times with no problems (unless you call running very slowly a problem). But, I'm ready to stretch myself and get to that next level. The mighty 10k! A few weeks back I was talking to my best friend who mentioned running the 10k Freedom Run on the 4th of July in Provo. Well, yesterday I committed. I signed up and paid and everything. I feel pretty good about being able to train to run the full 6 miles (ok I'm not going to lie. I'm pretty sure running 6 miles is going to kill me). However, I'm a little concerned about being able to run that 6 miles at that altitude. Yikes! But, I have to admit that I'm pretty excited about it.

Here's where I need your help. MUSIC! I need some good tunes to pump me up on my runs.
Suggestions please???

You just left a comment on my blog so I checked you out. Funny thing is, I've been here before. What a small little blog world it is! I'm a new runner myself, and since I HATE it (yet I'm running a marathon this October, and yes I realize I'm CRAZY) I rely heavily on my music to get me through. I do realize that you might not have the same musical tastes as me, but here are a few songs that have gotten me through some hard times:

B.O.B. - Outkast
Do Your Thing - Basement Jaxx
Wind It Up - Gwen Stefani
Lose Yourself - Eminem
The Last Samurai and Gladiator soundtracks (sounds weird, but they are highly motivating!)

Good luck!!

yeah, i don't know you either, though i found your blog through replikate, who i found through clemantine... but i USED to be sort of a runner (before my current pregnant state), not super fast, but i've run the st.george marathon a couple of times and the last time ran the whole thing with bloc party's "positive tension" song stuck in my head..."run, run, run..." anyway, my suggestions are block party, silent alarm album, or silent alarm remixed is also very good for running. also, a couple other bands that have a lot of good "running songs" are the faint, and vhs or beta...

Woo hoo! Way to go Christy. I'm very proud of you. (I also think you should put "Woo Hoo" on your music list--- it's so happy!)

I've run the Freedom Run a handful of times. My brother might be in the field with you this year. You'll have to watch for him!

What else? Hmm. . .I'll have to get back to you on that one.

Hello from a blogstalker! I too am running the Freedom Run 10k (with a couple of other friends too!) so I'll have to meet you then!

I love All Star by Smashmouth, and lots of other music that's kind of eclectic when it comes to running with it. Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband is one of my favorites! Good luck!

Hi,

This is #1 sister, sitting in her pajamas at 7p thinking she should be out running herself -- the pajama bottoms are just temporary there is much more to do tonight.

When you get all this music compiled (completely legally of course) could you completely legally share it with me? I'm too lazy to compile a list from all these great suggestions. ;)

Love,
LA

Hello Christy
Go for it! I would go for the goal of running a full marathon. I guess it is kinda hard, but it's just way awesome when you are crossing that finishing line you've been waiting for for 42 km!

What I'm doing while running: listening to podcasts! Way cool. Sometimes I also listen to talks, though that's been a while.

Well, you know I'm NOT a runner (although I DID take the giant leap of joining a gym this year) and I know NOTHING about music. So I'm little help that way. But maybe I'll compile a soundtrack of... myself! I'm hilarious and can be motivational at times... this we know from the mission. I'll be your inspiration! Just as you are mine! In all honesty, take luck! Vite! Vite!

Whoa, I think Rapsli is a tad coo-razy (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) for listening to podcasts and talks while running. Then again, he's probably a hard core runner who doesn't require a steady beat to force his feet to keep moving like I do. I think that is awesome, I'm slightly envious. Maybe someday I'll get there.

Hey, I was running this morning and found some other cool stuff. If you would be interested and willing, I would be happy to mail you a few CD's for your running enjoyment. You can email me your addy if you want at anniesblog@gmail.com. If not, it's totally cool, it won't hurt my feelings!

i am freaking in love with all of you!
anne- thanks for reminding me about BOB. i'd totally forgotten about that song but i love it... and looks like our musical taste is right on track because i have all the other songs (minus the soundtracks) on my running playlist!

Raps- podcasts? i'd never even considered that... hmm... i'll have to give it a shot.

Nat- PLEASE be my running soundtrack! tho i might pass out from laughter before i reach mile 2. oh- and BOB totally reminds me of you. remember how you'd sing it on the mission? haha

and the rest of y'all- THANKS for the suggestions!

I totally love Bon Jovi Crossroads album and just about any Niel Diamond. "I am I said" is particularly motivating for me when I am running (at a speed that I could really walk faster). Speaking of which, I started last week! My post-pregnant, no stamina, extra soft bod went for 5 minutes without stopping. Of course, then I got a drink and started again for a total of 40 minutes.

Speaking of being a rockstar, did you see LOST last night? You should get a ring just like Charlie's ring - but instead of "DS" it could be "CC" or "C2" or something equally cool. Maybe that would help motivate you, too.

Why I'm listening to podcasts while running:
A good reason for not going running: no time. Well, listening to a podcast you actually do something smart and learn something as well. So I guess this makes the time double effective.

I have to admit though, running the marathon I wasn't listening podcasts anymore, but some good Punk :)

I would also happily make you a mix of some of my favorites. Just email me at chloe.elizabeth@yahoo.com. I love dance/techno and I'm a fan of all thing hip/hop when I'm running.

I really enjoy Eiffel 65, Bloc Party, and my favorite is Young Love (you can download their album on iTunes).

One more thing...if you've got a nano, I highly recommend the nike+ chip. It talks to you as your running and you can track all of your runs online, including distance, average pace, as well as spot pacing. It is well worth the $30 investment. And you totally don't need the shoes for it. You can get a little "chip case" that you can attach to your laces. That's what I have.

It's a fantastic feeling when Lance Armstrong's voice comes on and says, "Congratulations! You've just completed your longest run!" Or something to that effect.

Wow- Lance Armstrong? iPod knows EVERYONE.
Darlin'- there are a slew of playlists according to mood/task/holiday, etc. Just go to the topic list and check under "playlist." I think you'll like the one called "Kick Out the Jamz."

Chloe- I don't know you, but I LOVE YOUR MUSIC.
